1 HRM Historical Timeline
Human Resource Management (HRM) is the function within an organisation that focuses on recruitment of, management of, and providing direction for the people who work in the organization. Human Resource Management can also be performed by line managers.
Human Resource Management is the organisational function that deals with issues related to people such as compensation, hiring, performance management, organisation development, safety, wellness, benefits, employee motivation, communication, administration, and training. (humanresources.about.com)
The first steps towards HRM and working conditions as we know today was when industrial welfare was introduced. In 1833 the first (male) factory inspector was appointed and in 1878 legislation was passed that meant that women and children should reduce their working hours to work no more than sixty hours per week – still an extremely long week by today’s standards! Around the same time Trade Unions were starting to form and develop. As individuals realised they had a ‘bigger’ voice together than they did alone bargaining and negotiating between unions and employers grew. The first Trade Union Conference was held in 1868 and seventeen years later eleven trade unionist were elected to the House Of Commons where they demanded improvements in wages and working conditions.
In July 1888 Bryant and May leading manufactures experienced a mass walk out of their staff.
