Homosexuality From Two Different Philosophical

The following essay is about homosexuality from the viewpoint of happiness and legislation. I am going to summarize the arguments of Michael Levin, who believes that homosexuality is abnormal from both viewpoints and also Timothy Murphy who argues that homosexuality is normal from both viewpoints. Furthermore, I will discuss what I think John Rawls would argue in terms of legislation and lastly I am going to discuss why I think Levin has the weakest position among others.

Michael Levin has three main arguments against homosexuality to explain why he believes homosexuality is abnormal. In the first argument is homosexuality is abnormal due to the fact that sexual organs are being misused. His second argument is that homosexuality leads to unhappiness, and thirdly he believes that it should not be legalized. In the first argument he states that "misusing the body's sexual organs could frustrate the intention of some purposeful agent", by which he means if one is not heterosexual they could be damaging their sexual organs and due to the frustration decreasing their happiness. He also mentions that homosexuals are less happier than heterosexuals and that there is a good evolutionary reason for their unhappiness. His main argument on the misuse of body parts is on grounds of natural selection, which he believes is also connected to the unhappiness of homosexuals. He argues that a man and a woman's sexual organs are made for each other. To prove his point he gives an example about a person who wears his teeth on his neck and does not use it for the purpose of chewing. His conclusion is that human beings enjoy chewing and not only our jaw muscles are made for chewing, individuals who do not chew will be selected out by natural selection. In his example he is comparing the person who wears his teeth around his neck to homosexuals and intending to say that they might be eliminated in the long run due to the misuse of their bodies.
