Overview
Organization scientists generally think of organizations as being comprised of three levels of analysis: the individual, the group or department, and the organization itself. Using a systems perspective, this course focuses on the group and interpersonal factors accompanying an organization's operation. Topics covered include understanding organizations as structured systems, individual differences and performance, group dynamics and performance, learning, motivation, leadership, and principles of communication particularly as they relate to decision-making and conflict management.
Course Goals
Organization scientists generally think of organizations as being comprised of three levels of analysis -- the individual, the group or department, and the organization itself. This course focuses on the problems and challenges managers face in dealing with the individual in the organization.
Within the framework of the course we will try to accomplish the following:
1) Expose you to ideas and literature that will enrich your understanding of organizational behavior topics.
2) Consider ways in which these concepts apply to you and your organizations.
3) Develop your ability to analyze various aspects of behavior in organizational settings and to use this information to improve personal and group outcomes.
4) Provide a forum for exploring these ideas/issues with other students.
Pedagogy
The course will employ lectures, class discussion, role plays, cases, in-class individual and team assignments, and individual and team homeworks and projects. Students will have two team presentations during the class, as well as a midterm and a final exam. One team project will involve presenting a review of the latest journal articles that relate to the weekly material.
