Founded in 1899, Harrison-Keys is a global publisher specializing in scientific, technical and business books and journals, professional and consumer books, textbooks and many other educational print products. With over 22,700 active titles and 2,000 new publications a year, the company has been regularly regarded as a leader in its industry (University of Phoenix, 2009). However, with the recent influx of competition from low-cost retailers, publishing companies such as Harrison-Keys are finding it difficult to remain competitive. In an effort to divert disaster and shepherd in a new organizational strategy, the Harrison-Keys Board of Directors have hired a new CEO by the name of Meg McGill. Ms. McGill, an avid supporter of all things digital, has determined that in order for Harrison-Keys to remain a viable institution within the publishing industry, the company must expand its horizons and finally enter the e-publishing arena. While this may very well be the key to the company’s continued success, its implementation has been rife with problems. This paper will propose a solution that will help Harrison-Keys with its transformation from a standard publishing format to an e-book format. It will identify the issues and opportunities that may result from the company’s current difficulties, as well as the different stakeholder perspectives and possible ethical dilemmas. After developing a problem statement and describing the end-state vision, this paper will look at several alternative solutions that could be used by Harrison-Keys. These alternatives will be analyzed to determine risk factors and mitigating techniques, before an optimal solution is chosen for development and implementation.
