In this essay, I will choose a single topic and two research based articles in relation to my chosen topic. In addition to these and using appropriate and relevant theory to support my discussion, I will discuss and evaluate the research methodologies used, compare and contrast the design. I will go further to discuss the interpretation of findings, the relevance to chosen topic as well as compare the nature of the new knowledge generalised by the different research approaches. Finally I will look at the implication for practice and future research.
I have chosen hand washing/hand hygiene. The reason for my choice is not only because of it’s relevance to clinical practice, but that it is an area that is widely advised in the NHS and yet the percentage for non-compliance is high.

A research proposal consists of a written plan that generates essential knowledge which enables the researcher to address the concern and provide an evidenced based nursing care to bridge the gap between nursing practice and care delivery, (Burns and Grove, 2005). Le May (2001), states that a research proposal enhances practice that enables the research problem to improve practice. However, Walsh and Wigens, (2003), reiterate that a detailed plan is a requisite for intended investigations.
Cormack’s framework (2000) suggests the hypothesis should be capable of testing, unambiguous, and state whether the study uses an experimental approach. A hypothesis can be defined as the prediction the researcher makes at the beginning of the study, which links an independent variable to a dependent variable (Rees, 1997). Hardey and Mulhall (1994) believe that devising concisely defined objectives and aims for a project can be a particular challenge, they are essential however, in providing the reader with a comprehensive and coherent statement of what the researcher hopes to achieve....
