Ghb Substance Abuse

Gamma-Hydroxy-Butyrate, also known as GHB, is a substance which is clear, odorless and tasteless. GHB is found naturally in the brain in small quantities but made synthetically in nail polish removers, superglues and cleaning products.

This drug was made in 1961 by a French researcher, Dr. Henri Laborit. It was made originally as an anesthetic. It was later used by bodybuilders who thought it would increase their body mass like a steroid. In the late 1990's GHB was known as a date rape drug that could be mixed in to foods and drinks. Today many states have restrictions of its use and sale.

GHB is often sold in small bottles the size of a hotel shampoo bottle. A dose of GHB is the size of one gram or less (the amount of shampoo that would fill the cap). These bottles contain about 10 doses. GHB is also sold in the powdered form which may be sniffed.

GHB depresses the respiratory system and decreases the amount of oxygen the brain receives. With large doses the result is unconsciousness and loss of memory. Other symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, seizures, vertigo and drowsiness can occur with larger doses. This drug is ideal for date rape because it leaves the victim unconscious and with little or no memory of the incident.
