Gandhi

Gandhi had once said “an eye for an eye will make the whole world blind; What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy?” Gandhi did not believe in the biblical statement “en eye for an eye” but rather to be able to forgive and to solve a problem no matter how large or small without the use of violence and hatred. For example, in the movie when Gandhi’s followers one right after another were walking towards the soldiers only to be beaten did not give up or retaliate. In the end to prove a point that violence will get you nowhere.
By not fighting back but turning the other cheek it make the aggressor(s) look bad. It’s a form of bullying. It makes the aggressor(s) look as they do not have a justified cause as to why they are attacking the defenseless. When Gandhi’s followers were getting beaten they did not fight back but continued on to prove a point. That violence will not get you anywhere except in a vicious circle that is hard to break.
It takes a lot of courage to walk up to someone knowingly and willingly allowing yourself to be beaten. Depending if I was passionate about the cause and sure it would make a difference for the better then yes I believe I would be able to do the same thing. For Gandhi’s cause I probably would allow myself to be beaten. Bruises and cuts will heal and go away but staying stuck with the same mentality of hatred and blaming others for your problems will stay until you change it.
In a scene in the movie a Hindu told Gandhi that a Muslim killed his son. In response Gandhi told him to find an orphan that is Muslim and raise him as his own to love and cherish but he must be raised as a Muslim. I believe Gandhi told the Hindu this in hope of him not being able to hate Muslims if his son is one. The Hindu would have a better understanding and acceptance towards that “other” religion.
