Storyline
The story “a game of cards” begins with the arrival of a young Maori at a train station. His father is waiting for him at the station and tells him, that his Nanny Miro is very ill.
Nanny Miro is his grandmother and he likes her very much and he spent a lot of time in the old house of his nanny. There is one thing this nanny likes most of all: she likes to play cards. She knows almost every game how to play. Most times a lot of other old women are there for playing cards with the nanny. One of them is her best friend, Mrs Hetta. And both women are the biggest cheater while playing cards. So the game always ends up in a dispute.
Then the young Maori visits his ill Nanny. The next day, he gets a phone that his Nanny is dying. So he went as fast as possible to Nanny Miro’s house. When he arrived, the whole cousinship was already convened around Nanny’s bed. Suddenly Nanny said that she likes to play another game of cards. So the whole cousinship started playing cards. The old ladies around Nanny’s bed, the men played poker in the kitchen, the children played in the corridor and even outside the house were people playing. And as soon as the women dealt the first hand the cheating starts and ends up in a big dispute and while arguing, the old lady died. And at her funeral she was buried whit a pack of cards.
Characterisation
Young Maori: The young Maori is a flat character. The reader doesn’t get a lot of information about him. And we even don’t know the name of him or her; we just know he is the Nanny’s grandchild. He is also the Narrator of the story and leads the reader through the story. He probably lives in the city and just comes back to the village on weekends to visit his parents and grandparents.
