Beginning in 1860, Florence Nightingale revolutionized the nursing profession by implementing principles, “To facilitate ‘the body’s reparative processes’ by manipulating the client’s environment”.
Her notable nursing principles include;

• Observation of the Sick
• Taking food
• Spirituality
• Ventilation
• Education
• Noise
• Duty of care
• Light
• Bedding
138 years after Florence Nightingale began her work; the Australian Nursing Council developed the National Competency Standards for the RN, as a direct result of pioneers such as Florence Nightingale, who continually raised the standards of nursing and evolved nursing practice into the respected profession it is today.
Even though over 138 years have passed, we think most of Florence Nightingale’s principles are relevant in today’s nursing practice, and form part of the basis of care, every client should receive.
