Film Poster Analysis – Crank

The film poster is designed for a film called Crank. The genre of the film is action, you can tell this from the slanted angle the text and images have, as it creates the impression of speed, and usually action films are fast paced. You can also tell the genre from the images used as they depict violence which is an aspect of the genre.

The main image for the film poster was manipulated by removing the colour and using black and blue duo tone, which gives a cold dark effect. The background of buildings in the image is almost all blacked out to create more focus on the main character; this effect could have been done by selecting the buildings with the magic wand tool and changing the brightness. The strip of images has also had its colour removed and filled with the warm colours orange and yellow, which is complimentary to the blue of the main image. The images appear to blur into each other, this could have been done by cutting out the different images using the lasso tool and using the blur and paintbrush tool at different transparencies to merge and fade the images together. The text would have been given a slant by using the tilt text tool.

The type used for the reviews is san serif, bold, in capitals and is very clear to read, as the reviews are important to attract viewers. The type is yellow fading into orange, which stands out against the background, but also matches the strip of images on the bottom, and the film title. The type for the title has a 3D effect with a shadow, a white outline and added shines on letters to make it stand out from the rest of the poster. The film title is also sans serif, bold and in capitals, as well as larger than the rest of the text, as it’s the most important part of the poster. The actors’ names above the title are almost the same type as the reviews, but are white to differentiate it from the other text.

The blue and black used in the main image portray a cold, dark,...
