“Aysha we need a good grade on this,” I said. “It is one of our last grades before the semester ends.” “Alright man, let me go shower and I’ll meet you in your room in 30 minutes,” said Aysh. We went our separate ways and met back up after about half an hour as planned. We ordered chinese and ate before getting started. The assignment was for us to read and discuss a short story called “Goodbye to all that” by Joan Didion. After eating we sat down and got started. “I think it is a great story to tell people, because she overcame and achieved one of her dreams in life,” said Aysh. “The fact that she stayed there eight years after such a rough start impresses me too,” she added. “Do you like the story?” She asked me. “O indeed. I think the story was really good,” I said. “It appears to me that a 20 year old girl that has lived in Sacramento all her life, who had enough courage to move to New York with no money is a great story to tell people. In fact, I can kinda relate to her story.” “How so?” asked Aysh. “Because coming out of high school I went to Providence College in Rhode Island for the first two years of college,” I replied. “Being that I am from Charlotte and I was only 18 going thirteen hours away from home is a pretty big deal. I learned a lot about myself and about life. “Yeah, I can see how that relates to Didion’s story,” Aysh said. “Hold on Aysh this is Taj calling me, let me see what he wants.” “Ok but make it quick I still wanna go out if we have time Kendria.” While I was on the phone with my boyfriend, Aysha went back over the story to refresh her memory a little bit. When I came back she was ready for a better discussion. “Ok, you ready Aysha?” “Ok back to the story, no more interruptions, I promise.” I said. “So what else do you like about this story Aysh?” “I never told my father that I needed money because then he would have sent it, and I would never know if I could do it by myself.” (Didion, 128) “See that’s where we differ,”...
