There are so many reasons for marriage in society today. If you ask most single people whether they want to get married, they will reply that they do, when the time comes. It is because they realize there are good reasons to find someone to settle with in life. The first and most recognized reason for marriage is love. When people find each other and fall in love, the greatest thing to do is get married. This is a public declaration that they have chosen to live with each other in this life. Love is essential for a marriage to work and, the greatest driving motivation to wedlock. Marriage is a commitment between two individuals who are in love and seeking companionship, intimacy and family. It is also a legal institution, where government imposes rules to get into and out of it. Time by time, popular culture have portrayed different picture of marriage, divorce and family. Today’s media is more liberal and not limited to show so called ‘traditional marriage’. In Rick Santorum’s essay ‘It takes family’ he states, “ in the heart of every divorce, there is a tragedy- one which the popular culture pretends does not exist.
Santorum blames all this family, marriage and divorce issues to liberals, who he addresses as ‘village elders’ and popular culture. He states, ‘Marriage matters because children matter’. Without marriage, children suffer. There is simply no better investment parents can make in their children’s future than a healthy marriage (89). He also proves his point by providing statics and studies. The study look place of more than 6000 young men aged 14-22, it was found that boys who grew up without a married mother and a father were more that twice as likely to end up in the jail as boys who did. Also, children living in a single parent home are as much as twice as likely to suffer physical, emotional, or educational neglect.
