Ethnic Groups and Discrimination Mexican-Americans of today have come from a long line of events that make it difficult to place us all in a group of colonized people or immigrants. Many Mexican-Americans became US citizens after the Mexican–American war. With many of our southwestern states being part of the Mexican Republic at one time, some would say that we colonized here instead of immigrating here. Take into consideration all of the Mexican-American people that live here in the United States now that have immigrated to this country in all of the years after the Mexican-American war and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in 1848. This essay will concentrate on the Mexican-Americans that have immigrated here into the United States both legally and illegally. Mexican-Americans face many difficulties here in the Unites States with immigration, racism, segregation, and prejudice like many other different people from various and ethnic and racial backgrounds. Many Mexican-Americans face prejudice in the workplace. I personally know from my place of employment that if I would have had darker skin and actually looked Mexican, I would not have the employment that I have today. In the place that I work the people that do the hiring for labor also say that Mexicans will be the ones coming in and looking for the jobs even though I have seen and equal amount of people applying for the labor job in the two and a half years that I have been employed there. With just this as data I can only imagine what it is like for a Mexican immigrant with a Spanish accent has to go through in everyday life as a minority, even when they are the majority. Of course Mexican-Americans face the dilemma of racism, every person with half of a brain knows that racial tensions are high in the United States, and this does not apply to Mexican-American, or Mexican immigrants.
