Overview
This document focuses on distance learning and some of its major advantages and disadvantages. The impact of distance learning and associated issues such as ethics on other universities and adult education are also discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC) located on H.A. Blaize Street, St. George’s, Grenada. Also included are the results from an interview with the UWIDEC Resident Tutor and a student of the university. Additional research was conducted via the internet and other texts such as A Gift of Fire written by Sara Baase. Based on the finding the writer then concludes that the merits of distance learning outweigh the demerits.
Introduction
Distance learning is also referred to as Distance education. Jennifer Pattern defines Distance learning as “a term which encompasses all learning that takes place at locations remote from the point of instruction. It is an option for beginning studies or continuation of study off-campus in locations via cable television, internet, satellite classes, videotapes, correspondence courses, or by other means.” Pattern also states that this method of learning integrates technology in educational courses whereby students may view and participate in lectures from various locations, or on an individual basis. Various forms of computer-based communication may be used to facilitate class discussions and communication among faculty and students.
