In just a few words, a complete portrait of a character can be formed. As in all Shakespearean drama, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar is masterful in its technique of characterization and eloquence. Brutus only makes the speech to tell his reasons for killing Caesar. The reason he gives is that Caesar was becoming too ambitious and would eventually become a a much too powerful ruler and take out his power on the people of Rome. He says that killing Caesar was in Rome's best interest. Brutus appeals to the people's minds and leaves an impression that Caesar would have become a tyrant. What Brutus terms as his reason is a hypothetical situation and is not reason enough for killing Caesar.Antony contradicts Brutus's order of not blaming him and the other conspirators in the conspiracy... He was only to talk about Caesar. He says that Brutus gave all the wrong reasons for killing Caesar. Antony really wants to avenge Caesar and tries to convince the crowd into believing the truth: the conspirators killed Caesar out of envy. Antony appeals to people's heart. Hence, he is successful in making the mob rise against the conspirators in 'mutiny' and 'rage'. Also, Antony provides evidences of Caesar's humanity and attachment to people by showing them that Caesar had made the people his inheritors of his wealth, gardens. Also Antony tells the crowd that Caesar had always sympathized with them. This has a greater effect on the people and Antony's periodical emotional outburst only contributes to it.In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Mark Antony’s speech at Caesar’s funeral, despite all his protestations to the contrary, is fueled by one purpose: vengeance to those who murdered his beloved Caesar. He uses combinations of verbal irony, repetitive diction, and heavy emphasis on emotions to sway his audience.
