Should Teens Have Premarital Sex?
The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy surveyed teenagers all over the United States and sixty-three percent of the teens who have had sexual intercourse said they wish they had waited, eighty-two percent of teens desire to have one marriage partner for life, and fifty-eight percent of teens surveyed said sexual activity for high school-age teens is not acceptable, even if precautions are taken against pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (Ayer). When weighing the pros and cons of premarital sex, the negatives far out weigh the positives. On the positive side there is fulfillment of sexual desires, hope for pleasure, and acceptance of peers. However, it is a proven fact that if you have sex before you are married you are more likely to: breakup before you marry, scare off someone who wants to marry a virgin, be less happy in your marriage, get a divorce, commit adultery after you marry, be fooled into marrying for the wrong reason, be less satisfied with your married sex life, have guilt feelings that may nudge you into a poor marriage, and be deprived of the important bonding that sexual intimacy can give a marriage (“Sex Before Marriage”). For these reasons, the practice of voluntarily refraining from some or all aspects of sexual activity, known as abstinence, should be practiced (Marshall, Johnson). To control sexual desires, one must make a conscious decision to practice abstinence and resist the pressures of peers, Hollywood, and our morally declining society. Although most people ignore the ethical aspect of premarital sex and feel that it is okay to experiment sexually, research shows that it is better to remain abstinent until marriage.
