Eating disorders are not unfamiliar to Korean women in 20s. They have heard the term either from a documentary on TV or from Hollywood gossip. However, they hardly think that eating disorders might be the problem of their own. This research's purpose is to increase the awareness of danger of eating disorders.
The researcher has come across many post ups on a web site, www.ewhaian.com, complaining about their weights and discussing the symptoms of anorexia and bulimia. Even though they knew that they have eating disorders, they were not aware of the seriousness. They were not willing to get help or find out why they are having eating disorders. Also, many of them had very low self-esteem. This would not be the problem of only Ewha Women University. This research will find out why these women are so pushed to loose weight even with these dangerous methods and have disorders.
Literature Review
Eating disorders are not unfamiliar to women in 20s. They have heard the term either from a documentary on TV or from Hollywood gossip. However, they hardly think that eating disorders might be the problem of their own. To increase the awareness of danger of eating disorders, there have been many researches regarding them.
In 1990, percentage of university students with anorexia nervosa was 0.7% and the percentage of students with bulimia nervosa was 0.8% (Hahn et al., 1990). From the research of Lee et al. (2003) the percentage of university students with eating disorders increased to 5.93%.
