Tourism is the act of travel for the purpose of not only recreation, but also the provision of services for this act. It might occupy local services such as entertainment, accommodation and catering for tourists. It may seem, that tourism brings only benefits, but further consideration shows that it also has disadvantages.
However, tourists cause environmental damage through forest fires, destruction of sand dunes and pollution. Consequently this serves negatively as increased pollution disturbs local residents and also it may discourage tourists from further entering the country.
After this, tourism undermines culture by commercializing it and this is often connected with increasing litter, graffiti, vandalism and noise - tourists do not always respect traditional cultures, which is sad but true.
The disadvantage is if the economy of a certain area becomes dependant on tourism, if say, your area gets bad publicity and the tourists don't come anymore, there goes the economy, because if the tourists don't come, their money doesn't come, either.
Too much tourism can kill the culture. Indeed, we have seen the “Americanization” of culture: fast-food, film, fashion which encroaches upon other cultures. Finally, with the growth of tourism, we have a hidden tourism side: sexual tourism.
Unfortunately, this tourism is very famous and the saddest element is that it attracts tourists to Asia for example. Thus, thousands of young girls are exploited in order to meet the demands of those “customers”.
In addition the number of foreigners living in the area has increased which may push the locals out of the housing market if they cannot afford the increased prices. On a national scale if Champa Sak begins to be over-advertised other areas of Laos may begin to decline. Tourists will want to visit southern Laos and thus visitors to less well known areas could decrease if Champa Sak begins to drain out the surrounding places.
