Climate Change-How Can We Stop The Disaster
The world’s scientists have spoken clearly: climate change is the defining challenge of our age.
Thousands of international scientists study the abrupt and irreversible changes of climate on our planet. A U.N. report predicted that a warming trend of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit emitted into the atmosphere could put up to 30% of species on the planet at risk of extinction. A warming trend of 3 degrees would put millions of human beings at risk from flooding. Sea levels would rise by 28 to 43 cm, and most frightening of all, the melting of the Greenland ice sheet would swamp coastal cities
What causes it?
Scientists studying our weather pattern have become increasingly convinced that human actions are changing the world's climate. As the demand for power in our homes and work has increased, the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released into our atmosphere has also increased. CO2 is the main gas responsible for climate change
Who are the main victims?
It is the world’s poorest people who are hardest hit by devastating droughts, floods and other extreme weather events. This is a massive injustice †climate change is caused by the world’s richest countries.
Need of the hour is A global deal that includes stringent emissions reduction targets and extra funding for adaptation projects is essential to the survival of these poor countries.
Mitigating the effects of climate change:
• adaptation: helping to cope up with the effects of climate change
All types of infrastructure will be affected and will have to be re-built: making roads and railways secure from flooding and storms, moving settlements away from rivers and coasts that threaten floods, securing buildings, electricity lines, and factories from storms.
Early warning systems, protective shelters and strengthened river embankments can help to reduce the impact of disastrous floods
• technology
Working in developing countries to help people choose and use technologies such as renewable energy that do...
