Section 2: Instructor Name Writing Exercises #1 Cheating The definition of “cheat” has different explanations in the dictionary. But when we refer it to cheating in the school, it means “to violate rules or regulations”. It is an unethical behavior but it is ubiquitous and rampant and it is generally accepted by many students in the schoolyard. Students do not feel ashamed and guilty when they cheat. Why is cheating so rampant in the schoolyards? What motivates students to cheat at a risk? What could teachers, schools and society do to change the situation? The two aspects above are external reasons why students cheat. If you take a deep look at the internal aspect of cheating, you will find a more convinced answer. That will also bring you to my point what motivates students to cheat. It is clear that students who cheat have distorted values. With those distorted values, they do not view cheating as an ashamed thing; they look cheating against instructors as a game. Once the distorted values are generally accepted by students, they will get used to do it year after year. Just as what students in Chapel Hill High School in North Carolina did, they cheated and told school officials that the cheating had gone on for years, as graduate seniors passed the keys down on. What have happened to students and transmitted distorted value to students? What motivate students to cheat at a risk? The answer is right there—good grades. Grade to the student is just like water to fish. A good grade guarantee a high GPA, a high GPA gives you advantages in applying for a higher degree, a high degree helps you find a better job than other competitors, a better job brings you more money than other employees. A good grade is the fundamental part of the chain. Every single student wants a good grade, in order to get a good grade, students choose different ways.
