August 27, 2008 at 10:00 am, I arrive for the first time into room 123 of the nursing building for my oral communications course. As I look around the room for any familiar faces I realize that this course requires me to expose my emotions to random people I don’t know. At that very moment I became very timid and nervous. Through the steps given in class it prepared me to execute each of the following speech topics: success, information, lottery, and persuasive with a little ease and grace.
Success means excelling in everything that one does. My membership into Delta Sigma Theta helped me become more outspoken and confident through the different social events we provide. The first speech we had present to the class was our success speech and I felt a little comfortable presenting this speech because of the passion I have for my organization. However, the only big problem that I had with presenting this topic was dealing with my anxiety of being in front of people I didn’t know and also trying to control my fidgeting. After I presented my speech to my peers my anxiety calmed down and I controlled my fidgeting by placing my hands behind my back through the few steps given in class. These steps also helped me prepare for my informational speech, which was much harder because I had to speak about a topic that I wasn’t fluent about the information.
The second speech that was to be presented in class was the informational speech. I did my informational speech on the Atlanta atmosphere. Like the success speech I was comfortable with this topic because I knew the topic very well but I still had to present this in front of class. Along with presenting it in class the length of the speech was a little longer meaning I need to perform longer with this topic.
