The Building That Kept The Secreet
In Spanish Harlem there is an old torn down building, that holds a terrible secret. The memories are trapped inside, only visible in the structure. The red paint is quickly pealing off and the building is starting to crumble. As you look at the metal door you get a feeling of a prison with its small square window and bars. The stoop of the building is cold, made of cement that has cracked due to the weather. You look up and see wooden framed windows in rows of four.
As you reach the door, your hand touches an old strange shape with artistic carvings that capture one of the last glimmer of beauty in this building. The dying light bulbs make the hallway dark and scary. The walls feel cold to the touch. Dark brown flammable paint is splattered with carelessness on the walls. The dirty white and black small tiles on the floors have faded and chipped. The missing tiles show the lack of maintenance and care. You walk up the wooden staircase, as you feel it creek and shift under your feet.
As you walk across the narrow hallway you hear your shoes echo through the building. You grab the next staircase rail and feel where the wood has grown old and is now splitting. The front of the railing has a snail shape curve to it. This little detail shows the time and care that was once put into the maintenance of the building. As you climb up the next set of old stairs you see two doors that lead into apartments. The two doors are steel painted light blue to bring life into the dark hallway. The walls are now "dirty white" from children and adults touching them.
The next railing is covered with grease from the air and residue from rats. To the left of the staircase is the single black painted door. The light on this floor is extremely dim.
