A Bridge To Wisemans Cove
The novel "A Bridge To Wiseman's Cove" explores the effect that change has on the lives of the characters; Carl, Harley and Skip. Change is the essence of living. Our lives change, our dreams change the seasons change, our world changes. Some are sought after, some avoided. Some bring joy, others bring grief and sorrow. These characters' behavior evolves towards other people around them and by the way they act towards each other.
For Carl Matt, life was just like a sailboat. All you had to do was just watch it come and go. When Carl first came to Wattle Beach, he was an awkward teenager, who never seemed to have the right words to say to anyone, especially girls. He was very conscious of his outer appearance and the fact that he is overweight. Carl always felt protective of his brother Harley - like a surrogate parent. His insecurity and shyness towards others was due to his unfortunate lifestyle. Being abandoned by his family, all Carl had to himself was a low self-esteem, a broken heart and the responsibility of a parent. Before Carl's experience in Wattle Beach, he had always been afraid of change. He learned so many things from all of the people he met in Wattle Beach. It all started with his job in the red barge. As soon as he started working, his purpose was to help Skip. He did this by trying his best at the barge and he loved it. "Though his breath returned, he kept his mouth shut to keep in the relief. And the joy. And his heart which felt so light it might well float straight up his throat and out with words." This quotation proves the joy he experienced when he got his job in the barge. Even Nathan and Beryl helped Carl evolve into a more confident character because usually, Carl was shy and he always kept to himself, but Nathan and Beryl forced him to speak up.
