Analysis of the Conversation
Ahmed Saeid / Thibroazuge, G.Dh. Madaveli. (Dec 2008)
Introduction:
This assignment is based on main feature and organization of speech acts in conversation. It is an analysis of the stages of conversation, where both English and Dhivehi are considered. The aim of this analysis is to find out how the aspects of speech acts like maxims, turn-taking, adjacency pair, repairs, side sequences are used in conservation of both languages.
Conservation is one of the most prevalent, yet visible form of social interaction (Goodwin & Heritage, 1990). According to Miller (1999), conservation is impromptu, spontaneous everyday exchange of talk between two or more people. For a conversation to run smoothly and affectively, organization of turns must be managed orderly. This orderliness is seen as interactional methods, device systems that are used by members or participants of the conversation (Have, n.d.). When people talk, they shape their utterances to take account of the identity of the speakers and what their interests are.
Conversational analysis is a disciplined way of studying local organization of interactional episodes (Have, n.d.). Miller (1999), notes that it is a way of thinking about analyzing the pragmatics of ordinary conversation, focusing on the interactive and practical construction of everyday interchanges. Moreover, it involves close examination of internal evidence within spoken text.
In order to get data used in this analysis, about seven minutes was selected and recorded from a television drama and played repeatedly, in order to listen to each turn well. Then, it was written in the form of a dialogue. Finally the transcribed data was typed to make it easy or use in the discussion.
