Write an Analysis of the Film Hiroshima Mon Amour.
Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959) was a French-Japanese co-production, directed by Frenchman Alain Resnais, with screenplay by novelist Marguerite Duras. Resnais is sometimes classified as a New Wave filmmaker, an informal group, characterized by its rejection of the prevailing conservative, classical cinema form, that instead embraced revolutionary approaches and experiments regarding editing, narrative and visual style and chose themes with strong socio-political content.
Resnais, was known as a documentary filmmaker and skillful editor, before Hiroshima Mon Amour, his first feature film, released in 1959, 14 years after the bombing of Hiroshima. It won the Cannes Film Festival, International Critics' Award and Film Writers' Award, 1959 and the New York Film Critics' Award, Best Foreign Film, 1960. Five years earlier he enjoyed success with the documentary Night and Fog (1955), a thirty-minute documentary about the Holocaust in which he pioneered non-linear approaches to the treatment of time that were further advanced in the execution of Hiroshima Mon Amour.
The recognition gained with Night and Fog first prompted producers to commission from Resnais, a one-hour documentary named Picadon, an examination of the Japanese psyche based on the effects of the atomic bomb explosion. Initially he was concerned that it would be too much like Night and Fog and suggested that: “… they would be better off buying one of a number of excellent Japanese documentaries on the effects of the atomic bombs that were dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.”
He reconsidered and instead decided to create a fiction and invited novelist Marguerite Duras to work closely with him on the screenplay.
