Alexander the Great has been one of the most influential men in history. He set out to conquer the world and accomplish the impossible. He had a gift for military strategy, a thrust for knowledge, and undying love for his people.
During t6he 14th century B.C.E. there was a series of conflicts between the Spartans and their allies. The Spartans defeated Athens and the Delian league. This made Alexander’s father the Macedonian king Philip easy prey. The Macedonians were considered to be barbaric people. But, they had an amazing military prowess. They eventually had all of Greece under their control. King Philip was cheated of his place in history by meeting an untimely death, while participating in a festival in 336 B.C.E.
King Philip was succeed by his 19 year old son, Alexander. From the beginning Alexander showed strong leadership and military skills. Alexander set out to accomplish the impossible dream. He wanted to create on world. Before his death he came very close to accomplishing the impossible. In the 14 years that he ruled, he conquered most of the then world.
Alexander had natural yearning for philosophical discussion and understanding. His father, king Philip, hired Aristotle as a tutor for Alexander. Aristotle feed the flames of knowledge that Alexander craved. It was said that Alexander’s most treasured possession was the Iliad of Homer. Alexander’s influence in education and so in civilization has been profound, extending in to even our own age.
Alexander possessed a great love for his people. They in return loved him. Their love for him was so strong that they took his dreams of creating one world and made military glory the object of their ambitions. It has also been said that he adored his mother. She was the one person that he would confide in.
