Abstract
This paper will describe the tools, skills and training that are needed for a successful career as a network engineer. I will go into the basic job description, projected salary expectations, and employment outlook. I will then go into more detail on the actual functional duties of a network, the tools available to aid the network engineer, and the network equipment that is used on a day to day basis. In conclusion, I will tie all of these aspects into a brief summary about this career field.
Finding a Career in Network Engineering
For many people, the idea of finding a first career can be frustrating. There are so many choices to be made, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Before we get into the field, let's cover the basics of choosing a career. I gave a survey composed of nine questions to four adults that covered the reasons for choosing their career path. The results of the survey were varied by the age of the responders. When asked about their employment status, two answered that they were employed and two answered that they were looking for employment. The two that were looking for employment were spread between the 25-35 age groups and 55-65 age groups. Out of the four responses only one was a college graduate, one answered with some coursework, and two had no degrees. The one with a college degree had a BA in Administration.
Asked whether they required a degree in their field, one had a response of their degree being related and three others replied with no degree required for their field. When asked on why they chose their career, two answered that the job appealed to them, one answered the travel appealed to them, and one answered other (forced career change).
