When most people thing of therapy they think of lying on a couch and talking to someone who is not listings. Therapy can be so much more than talking to someone about personal problems. There are four major types of therapy being Psychoanalysis, Cognitive Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Client-centered Therapy.
Developed by Sigmund Freud Psychoanalysis Therapy is one of the most well known forms of therapy. Psychoanalysis is commonly called “talk therapy”, because you mainly talk to the therapist about your problems. The therapy tries to find patters that could link to why you are having these problems. This type of therapy should offer a stress free place for the client to express his or her feelings. In some cases just having someone to talk to about your problems helps.
Client-Centered Therapy is an indirect form of therapy. Using this approach to therapy the therapist usually does not make a diagnosis or offer advice. Instead the therapist lets the person talk and tries to make the fell as if they are being heard and not judged. This type of therapy is supposed to make the client realize things about themselves that they have been denying.
Many people do not realize that there are so many different forms of therapy. Over the years many different forms of therapy have been used. Some are proven to work and some forms are not commonly used anymore.
