1984
The novel 1984 is a story about Winston Smith, a lower member of the Party that is ruling over the state of Oceania. The Party rules under the dictatorship of Big Brother. Winston, a bright and perceptive person, begins to feel a sense of reverence toward the Party and everything that it stands for, but he knows he cannot openly express his feelings. As a result, Winston continues his public life as the Party would wish, but begins living his private life detesting the Party and its policies. They fall in love and meet away from the intruding eyes of the telescreens, microphones, and patrols. Young Julia gives the lonely Winston a purpose for living and an escape from the misery of his life. Since she too hates the restrictions and controls of the Party, together they envision ways of overthrowing Big Brother. Both Winston and Julia are aware of an underground organization, known as the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is headed by Goldstein, whom the Party reports as their chief enemy. Winston and Julia think of joining the Brotherhood, but are unable to, as they do not know how to go about doing so. The Thought Police soon catch Julia and Winston together and arrest them and send them...
