While there may be arguments whether 1980s was strongly or weakly influenced by 1970s, one can easily argue that 1970s had strongly influenced 1980s. The feminism movement started by groups of women protesting for equal rights lead to an increase in opportunities and choices for women in the 1980s. By the end of 1980s, women in the society were pretty much equal to men. Fashion in the 1970s was daring, carefree, and diverse. For women, skirts ranged from extremely long to drastically short and fabrics were bright and boldly patterned. Men wore their shirts tight, their trouser-legs wide and their moustaches long. However, the daring, carefree, and diverse attitude had caused massive teen pregnancies and aids. Because of the consequences, 1980s focused more on the message that one could become as successful as you believe to be. Therefore, during this era in history many people “dressed for success”. A large number of men and women wore suits and office clothing that would help them move up the success ladder. The 1970s oil crisis demonstrated the powerless and obedient united states because they had no other choice but to create peace in the Middle East. Iran hostage crisis also shows the incapability of United states. But during the 1980s, America’s power increased and invaded countries in order to stop communism which displayed the military power they had. This increase in power had been influenced by the fact that Reagan increased military budget in order to maintain power of the country because they had learned their lesson from oil crisis. The economic upheaval of the 1970s had important political consequences. The American people expressed their discontent with federal policies by turning out Carter in 1980 and electing Hollywood actor and California governor Ronald Reagan as president.
