12 Apostles
You can see the 12 Apostles in Rome above St. Peter’s Square. The Apostles were Jesus’ disciples (followers) that were picked by him. The Apostles carried the message of Christianity across the world. They believed that Jesus is the Messiah and they lost their lives because of it. With out the Apostles Christianity might not be what it is today.
Peter also known as Simon was a Galilean fisherman. He was the son of John. Peter’s name was changed to Simon when he confessed that Jesus is the Messiah. He was part of Jesus’ inter-cabinet (a circle of Jesus very close Apostles). Peter was the one Jesus talked about at the last super who would deny he knew Jesus 3 different times. He did not want to die the same way Christ did, because he did not feel worthy to die such a death. Therefore, Peter was crucified upside down
Andrew was the first apostle to be called by Jesus. He was Peter’s brother. He was a Bethsaida Fisherman. Andrew went to Greece where he preached, converted people to Christianity, and healed people. Andrew had been crucified on an X-shaped cross in Patras, Greece. He also chose to be crucified this way because he did not feel worthy to die the same way Christ died. Andrew is the Patron Saint of the city of St. Andrew in Scotland. There you will see a flag with a diagonal cross which is the symbol for St. Andrew. People pray to St. Andrew when they need help. Soldiers prayed to St. Andrew for protection.
John is the beloved disciple. He was very close to Jesus. He was part of Jesus’ inter-cabinet. His symbol is the eagle. He was an evangelist. John is also known as John the Theologian and John the Devine. John is often with Peter. John followed Jesus when he was arrested, he was at the foot of the cross, and he was one of the first to the tomb. John had the revelation of the Apocalypse.
