10 Ways to Determine Credibility on the Internet
1. Accuracy – is when you are able to verify the information when you are not on the internet such as newspaper article, phonebook, or physical company. How reliable the information is.
2. The Authority of the website – when you are able to find out who made the web site. Verifying the credentials, qualifications, and who might be associated with the person or business, and if the web site is accredited by a known individual or corperation.
3. Objectivity – does the information have a biased opinion or is it based on fact. Does the author have information on both sides or is it single sided.
4. Authenticity – where is the information coming from, has the information been reviewed by an established source.
5. Reliability – Is the information accurate, who sponsors the information, does the info, come from a school, company, or business website. What is the motive for the site is it to inform, sell, instruct, or persuade.
6. Timeliness – Does the website provide a time such as date or when the information was conceived. How relevant is the information to yours.
7. Relevance – Is the information relative to what you need. Does the information contain words, pictures, charts, sound, or video.
8. Efficiency – Is the information usable with what you are trying to accomplish. Is the information easy to use. Does it have table of context, menu, or an index.
9. Wrong information - (information about information) For instance abstracts, content summaries, contents, etc. Evaluative meta-information such as recommendations, ratings, reviews, and commentaries, or negative meta-information.
10. look for citations – If there is statistical data such as football scores or stock exchange information check with the reputable sites.
